Merfolk have two forms of magic that are exclusive to their species: coloration and shamanism. Any merfolk can learn either form of magic, but usually only a few in any group do so.
Coloration consists of changing the color of a contiguous surface. Different colors can be used simultaneously, allowing the creation of gradients or patterns. This magic has little intrinsic practical value, but is important to several merfolk cultures in which color plays a large role.
Shamanism consists of reading and manipulating "energies" (light, heat, magic, life, motion), and imparting them to objects or surfaces. Some of the most common uses include manipulating coral to grow in pleasing ways or causing rocks to emit light or heat.
